Understanding Mental Health Through the Lens of Culture

Updated: Dec 16, 2025

The Role of Cultural Neuroscience in Mental Health

Recent research has revealed important insights into how sociocultural contexts influence mental health across different ethnic groups and populations. One study identified that socioeconomic status plays a crucial role in determining health outcomes, highlighting the need to understand its effects to address health disparities within and across generations. Cultural neuroscience has shown that various environmental factors—such as culture, geography, and socioeconomic conditions—significantly impact the genetic, neural, and behavioral mechanisms related to mental health disorders.

Given these findings, how can society better support individuals facing mental health challenges? One effective approach is to improve resource allocation between urban and rural areas, ensuring that mental health services are accessible to all. This requires raising awareness among policymakers about the critical importance of mental health and advocating for proactive measures to prevent tragedies like suicide and school shootings. By engaging those in positions of influence—through donations or other support—we can create a meaningful impact on mental health care and the well-being of our communities.

Comorbidities

A recent cross-sectional study explored the relationship between mental health disorders and physical health conditions. Researchers analyzed data from 18 face-to-face household surveys involving 47,069 individuals across 17 countries and found a strong link: individuals with mental disorders face an increased risk of developing chronic physical conditions.

While the exact nature of this risk remains complex and multifaceted, it’s clear that the lifestyles of those living with mental health issues are often adversely affected. Many of these individuals find themselves in survival mode, focused more on basic needs than on improving their quality of life. In fact, the co-occurrence of mental and physical health conditions not only impacts the individuals directly affected but also places a significant economic burden on communities, states, nations, and the global economy as a whole.

This burden is particularly heavy for families with lower socioeconomic status, who face additional challenges in accessing care and support. Consider the case of a Latino family of five in Westchester County, NY. One of the daughters, Amelia, has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder and also suffers from diabetes. Her mother, a registered nurse, juggles her demanding job while managing Amelia’s medications, doctor visits, therapy sessions, health insurance paperwork, and medical bills—all while raising two other children. One hot summer night, Amelia experiences a sugar crash and falls down the stairs. Her mother rushes to her side, quickly helping her recover.

This scenario highlights the struggles faced by many low-socioeconomic families raising children with mental health challenges, often exacerbated by physical comorbidities. Unfortunately, these realities often go unnoticed, emphasizing the urgent need for society to catch up in addressing these issues and raising awareness.

To improve the quality of life for individuals dealing with such challenges, we need a concerted effort from public health leaders, policymakers, healthcare professionals, and interdisciplinary teams. Together, they can develop better strategies for coping, adjusting, preventing, and reversing the health crises that so many families encounter daily.
